Two Gold Medals at the County Championships

Ross Millington

Ross Millington climbs towards his third consecutive County Cross Country title

At the recent Greater Manchester Cross-County Championships staged at Heaton Park, Andy Nixon took his first county title ahead of Ben Styles in second place, with Simon Bennett 6th and David Hicketts 8th. Stockport’s under-17 boys won the team award ahead of Sale Harriers and Trafford AC. A 1-2-3 would have been a possibility if Jacob Corrigan had been running!

Ross Millington continued his season's unbeaten run with another victory taking it to three County titles in a row. Even better for the Woodsmoor flyer was the beating of the recently crowned English Schools' Cup winner Simon Horsfield of East Cheshire. Also Steve Pearson should have finished in third place, but unfortunately ran off course and eventually finished 6th.

On the Girls side Jess Coulson finished third in the under-13 girls' race.

On the same day Elli McLoughlin returned to form with a third in the under-17 girls' 1,500 metres at the English Institute of Sport Event in Sheffield with a new personal best of 5 minutes and 1 second.

Ellie and a few others in the squad are aiming to be in good shape for the Northern Indoors and the AAA's Indoor Championships.

Frosham Cross Country

Ladies cross-country team

The ladies' squad had a good turnout at Frosham despite family commitments during the festive holiday. With 11 present at this event, it made it our biggest turnout for a while, they placed 1st team overall including the girls.

Estelle McGuire was our first counter in 14th place followed by Michela Stepto in 18th. Carly Davies 23rd and Liz Bowden in 35th made up the first four counters.

Karen McCrackle 39th and Jayne Lawton 43rd were running their first cross country and acquitted themselves well.

Next was Debra McCann battling out in 45th followed by Sheryl Wiblin 53rd, Marie Cosgrove 56th, June Platt 60th and Petra Pearce 62nd out of a field of 72.

Well done to all. The next event is at Stockport on Sunday 13th February so we will be looking to be at full strength.

Elsewhere Jenny Murray continued good recent form with a win in the Bolsover 10km, recording a time of 37:19 on an undulating course in difficult conditions.
