Bashir takes the British Masters 5km title

Stockport Harriers' Bashir Hussain romped to victory to take his first national veterans road title on Sunday in the Puma British Masters 5km Road Championships in Horwich town centre.

Bashir who has been a member of the Harriers for over 30 years won the race on the town centre three lap course.

The weekend sporting festival that also included cycle races and the AAA's Road Race Championships for men and women.

Bashir who has the distinction of representing England on track, cross country, fell and mountain running in a running career that started at Offerton High School.

Since then the Stockport Harrier has raced all over the world and has just recently returned from a spell in the U.S.A.

He won the race in a new course record of 15 minutes and nine seconds from Solihull runner Paul O'Callaghan and Scottish runner Charles Thompson of Carburslang AC.

Other vets in the race Mike Shaw finished 19th in the Vet 40 category and Len Best 7th in the Vet 50 race.

Stockports ladies' squad finished 6th team in the AAA's team race, Jenny Knass first home in 32nd, close on her heels were Vicky Barratt 36th and Sharon Glendon 37th.


Middle distance stars achieve three grade 1 standards

Stockports' rising middle distance star athletes Lucy McLoughlin, Jess Coulson and Ross Millington, who will all run in the 1,500 metres at this year's English Schools' Track and Field finals in a fortnights time, sharpened up with some top drawer performances in the 800 metres at the the Northern Young Athletes League match at Longford Park Stadium, Trafford.

Northern under-15 1,500 metre champion Lucy McLoughlin who ran a personal best of 2.13 in the 800 metres at the Trafford Open Grand Prix meet on Tuesday night strolled home to win easily in 2.17.

Jess Coulson the under-17 Northern 1,500 metre champion also broke her best time for 800 metres with 2.16.

Ross Millington won the man of the match award for his storming performance to easily win the under-17 Boys' 800 metres also shaving 1 second off his best in 1.58 to earn a grade 1 for the event.

This Saturday Stockport's senior men and women's teams will have full strength squad out at their Northern League match at Wavertree, Liverpool. Bashir Hussain and Steve Vernon will be competing, Vernon will then fly out to Austria to compete in the European Mountain Running Championships on July 10th.


Beaver's big night out

Paul Beaver's training group hit the town this weekend on their annual night-out in Stockport.

Starting in the Waterloo at 7pm on Friday, 1st July, then onwards to the Royal Oak, Weatherspoons, Boars Head, Arden Arms to finish up in the Railway on Portwood.
