Harriers on international duty
Report: Dave Turnbull
Jess Coulson is on international duty on 27th January she has been selected to run for the Great Britain team at the Lisbon cross country international.
Team mate Ross Millington will race for England in a cross international in Seville, Spain on 20th January.
This weekend (12th January) the pair will join Steve Vernon and Peter Riley at the televised Great North Cross Country event in Edinburgh to race over what will be this year’s venue for the World Cross Championships in March.
Ross will race in his first senior international over the 4km distance with Steve and Pete facing 5-time World Cross champion Kenenisa Bekele in the 10km event.
Jess Coulson steps up into the senior women’s race to face Olympic 10,000 metre champ Debarber plus a host of foreign internationals.
Sale Festive 5
Report: Phil McCann
The Sale Festive 5 for many of the Stockport Harriers’ ladies saw them run their final race of the year. Jenny Knass had still not quite recovered from her injury sustained at the London Marathon this year, decided to follow up with her run at the Stockport 10 two weeks earlier to try a little speed work in this 5 miler.
The winning lady was in form Pauline Powell from Blackburn in 27-54 with Jenny Knass finishing 10th lady and 1st lady Harrier in 31-03. Following up were Kerrie Wood 14th lady/1st V40 in 31-57 and Sarah Lomas 15th lady in 31-58 battled together with this being Sarah's first 5 miler.
Next was Liz Turton finishing off the Year to finish in 35-58 and Helen Todd was not giving up without a fight finishing in 37-29.
Following up with her first race for nearly 2 months saw Debra McCann finish in 39-23 and gave me a target to aim for to beat my wife again! However to try and get close to our Chairman Mike Durcan was a more realistic target, there was an additional problem with Janet Booker overtaking me early on. I had to use all my race tactics and made my come back overtaking Janet with 200m to go! finishing 41-51 only 1 minute behind Mike with the target being 2 minutes. Janet followed home feeling robbed of her first victory over me, her time 42-08 maybe next time. Elaine Devine and Sue Howard enjoyed their Christmas run wearing antlers and all to finish together in 52-18.

Ross wins Brussels Lotto Cross Cup
Report: Dave Turnbull
Ross Millington won his first junior cross country international race in Brussels on Sunday.
The Cross Cup International series is one of the highlights on the European cross circuit.
Ross won in the closing stages of the tight three lap course, taking over the leaders on the final descent before snatching victory from Dutch runner Abdi Nageeye to win by over 5 seconds in front of huge crowds that gather for the Christmas event in the heart of Brussels.
Also in the race Andy Nixon ran well in his first ever international to finish 10th.
17-year-old Jess Coulson took a number of top name scalps after deciding to run in the senior women’s event to finish in 20th.
Ross and Jess will be joining Steve Vernon to run in the Great North Cross international on January 12th after which Ross will represent England in the Seville International cross race on January 20th.

Schools’ Cross Country League
Report: John Wharf
The Boys’ years 3/4 league is developing into a real head-to-head for first place between Aaron Chapman and Fraser Hawksworth, both of St Mary's, Marple Bridge. They are equal on points and have each beaten the other by one place, twice. However, lurking well down the table are two runners who have run only two of the four races: Michael Quin of Woodley, who won both his races and Michael Shipperlee, who has a first and fourth to his credit. If they both do the last two races, we are in for a sparkling competition.
Caitlan Wilson of Gee Cross Holy Trinity is well ahead on points in the Girls' years 3/4 league and will comfortably win the title unless we see Keeley-Shaye Goodwin of Hazel Grove, Grace Garner of Woodley, or Eliza Brackenridge Jones of Norbury Hall rejoin the fray in the last two races.
Like, Caitlan, Harry Ridgard of St John Fisher looks comfortable at the head of the Boys' years 5/6 table, but Danny Lawton has had three clear wins out of three races and needs just one more for outright victory. Cian Conway (St John Fisher) and Clark Seeds(Gee Cross) and William Garner (Woodley) are also potential contenders for medals.
Bethaney Donnelly (Corrie) leads the Girls' years 5/6, but is being closely challenged by Leah O'Connell (St Mary's, Heaton Norris). But again, the head of the table is under threat from two runners who have done one race less: Megan Ashelby (Corrie) with three convincing wins and Roisin Clegg with three second places.
The January and March races will be worth watching. Happy Christmas and a healthy new year to all the competitors and their supporters, and to the members of Stockport Harriers who give their time to the Schools’ Cross Country League!
